Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend

Pinup by Liz goes to Viva Las Vegas!

I never made a blog post about Viva Las Vegas 2015, and since I've been spending some time preparing for Viva 2016, I thought today was a great chance to reflect on last year!

Last year was actually my first year to attend Viva.  I love car shows and rockabilly music and my husband and I have wanted to go for years but since I'm also a mom, leaving my kids for that length of time was never really feasible for me when they were smaller.  Last year, my kids were finally old enough for my husband and I to be able to take the trip!  Somehow the stars aligned perfectly and Cherry Dollface was looking for a photographer to team up with on photo shoots, and I jumped at the chance and I'm so glad I did because I got to meet so many great pinup girls from around the world and we got some wonderful photos. Here are just a few of the lovely ladies that we worked with at the Palms Hotel and Casino.  As you see we fully utilized the hotel suite for our shoots! Hair and makeup in all photos is by Cherry Dollface.

I'm happy to be teaming up with Cherry again for Viva Las Vegas Number 19 in April. We still have an opening for a shoot like this on Tuesday, April 12th, if you would like to be the lucky lady who books!  Email me at for more info!

Last year I also did a few shoots on my own at the car show, and they were just great! I'm offering Viva Car Show shoots again for 2016 and still have a couple openings, email me at for details!

Session spotlight: Hexi Lee Voodoo at Tulsa Obscura

When local pin up and alt model Hexi Lee Voodoo approached me about doing a themed shoot inside local oddities shop Tulsa Obscura I was super excited. It's always so great when a client comes to me with a special idea for a shoot. As much as I love my studio, I love doing custom themed photo shoots in unique locations around Tulsa!

 The store owners couldn't have been sweeter or more accommodating, and I had an awesome time looking at all the cool products they sold there like jewelry, home accessories, and more.  They were really committed to selling locally crafted items there, and I really respect the fact that they go out of their way to support Oklahoma artists.

If you know anything about local ghoulish pinup cutie Hexi Lee Voodoo, it's that she loves Ouija boards and other creepy things, so we made sure to incorporate tons of that into the shoot.  Luckily Obscura had most of this stuff for sale in the shop and allowed us to use it for photo shoot props.

This was such a great shoot and Hexi looked so beautiful and I was so happy with how the photos turned out! You can also find the above photo published on the cover of the Fall 2015 issue of Pink Peacock Pinup magazine.

Sometimes it's really fun to step out of the cheesecake pin up box and do something different, and this alternative goth style shoot was extremely fun to do!

Oklahoma's pin up scene {Tulsa pin up photographer}

Now that I've had the opportunity to photograph pin up girls from across the country and even around the world, I often get asked about what the pin up scene here in Oklahoma is like, so I wanted to share my insights!  As a pinup photographer, I often get a behind the scenes look into this fun subculture! Since Oklahoma is in the middle of the country I think it is sometimes overlooked as having much of a "scene" in anything compared to what's happening on the coasts or in bigger cities, especially when we don't really have any major spokesmodels that go out of their way to nationally represent Oklahoma as a thriving pin up and vintage loving community, but we actually have a lot going on here! Both Tulsa and Oklahoma City have large pin up communities that regularly plan events.  Sometimes the local pin up girls have events on their own like photo shoots, lunches and other get togethers, and sometimes they blend in with the rockabilly community at concerts and car shows, and sometimes we can be found at other events like burlesque and bellydance shows supporting other local ladies.  Either way, most girls are supportive of each other and it's all about having fun and getting to know other girls who are into things like vintage fashion!

Some people have given the Oklahoma pin up community a bad reputation by spreading false rumors. I don't know if this stems from jealousy or a negative personality or what, but I urge everyone to please get to know people for themselves rather than judging people based on things they have heard!  You might be missing out on an awesome friendship by harboring negative feelings towards someone you don't even know!

Girls here really are supportive of one another.  It's so great to walk back stage at a pin up contest and see women helping one another with their hair or makeup, and happily handing out advice or tips.  Instead of being competitive and rude to each other, everyone is supportive and cheerful and friendly!

Since I became involved in the pin up community here, I am constantly busy and constantly surrounded by strong, smart, beautiful women that I'm proud to call my friends!  From pin up contests to car shows to burlesque events to rockabilly concerts, it seems like something is going on almost every weekend from about April to September.  I love having so many chances to do my hair and get dressed up and go out to hang out with other Okie pinup gals.

People often ask me how to get involved. If you're a local girl and interested in getting to know other girls in the local pin up scene, please don't hesitate to email me!  I'm always more than happy to point you in the right direction for events, Facebook groups, and other opportunities to join in! I know sometimes it's hard to get yourself out there, but taking that brave step and approaching a group of girls at a car show or pin up event might just get some new friends into your life!  And everyone really is nice! We have such a great, supportive community of women here that I'm so thankful to have met! Also, keep an eye on my Pinup by Liz Facebook page, as I always post about any local pin up related events that I'll be at on there!

Valentine's Day Pinups in a Heart Shaped Candy Box! {Tulsa pin up and boudoir photography}

Happy Valentine's Day!  Whether this holiday finds you coupled up with a sweetheart or happily single, I hope you have an amazing day and pamper yourself somehow.  As you may already know, at Pinup by Liz we love treating our clients for Valentine's Day with an awesome themed set! Two years ago we brought a ball and claw tub in to the studio, last year we had a custom kissing booth set built for our photo shoot, and this year we built a giant heart shaped candy box that our clients could actually pose in!  With the help of Hashbrown, Bootleg Betty, and Katie Belle, we built a beautiful, satin covered, quilted candy box in one day.  Here are a few of our photos from the shoot:

As you see, we had such a wonderful time!  We also did quite a few private boudoir sessions this January that were gifts for some very lucky significant others. And if you didn't get in on the mini session day, don't fret!  The giant candy box is at our downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma studio and is always available to be booked as a set for your own custom pin up or boudoir session!  Email me at for more details!
